General preventative care for your goats

We aren't Veterinaries.  This information is only an example of how we care for our animals.   Please consult with your Veterinary before giving your goats any medication or vaccines.  This page is intended as a helpful guideline.  :o)

Twice a year injections

We give our Does and Bucks  CD/T and Bo-Se shots twice a year .   We vaccinate them one month before breeding and one month before the Does have their Kids.

vaccinating our Kids

We give our babies 1/4 cc of Bo-Se at birth

At  5wks.....1 full vaccination of CD/T

At  10 wks......1 full vaccination of CD/T

and twice a year thereafter.

Disbudding

We disbud the Buck Kids at 2 to 3 wks for the Pygmy Goats and 7 to 10 days for the Dairy Goats.

We give the babies a Tetanus Anti-Toxin shot at the time of disbudding,

Pinkeye ---  Experimental vaccination

Very few products from antibiotics to vaccinations are made for goats.   Nearly everything we use is made for Sheep or Cattle.

There is a lot of controversy among breeders as to rather Pinkeye vaccines are effective in goats.  I've talked with breeders and Veterinaries who say they are effective and I've talked to breeders and Veterinaries who say they aren't.   This year we decided to run our own experiment to see if our goats developed immunity from the Vaccines for Pinkeye.   In Nov. 2004  we vaccinated our entire herd with Pinkeye Vaccine.  We gave two inoculations , three weeks apart.  We used a new Vaccine which isn't necessarily approved for Goats but of course many of the products we use for our goats aren't.

Piliguard Pinkeye-Trivalent  effective against 3 strains of Moraxella bovis-EPP63, FLA64, and SAH38. Safe for Pregnant Cows. Giving 2ml under the skin 3 to six weeks apart prior to the onset of Pinkeye season. Annual boosters are required.         We ordered it from Jeffers Livestock Catalog under the Cattle drop down list.  http://www.jefferslivestock.com/

In 2003 we had Pinkeye here for the first time.  It ran through our herd and left our goats standing with eyes totally clouded over stuck shut, ulcerated and unable to see at all.  Some of our Pregnant Does lost their babies due to the illness.  It seemed nothing we did made any difference.  For three weeks the Pinkeye ran it's course.  It was a nightmare and I never wanted to see it again.  Unfortunately this year when Pinkeye season began in Nov.  I went out one morning to find 3 new cases of Pinkeye!  I immediately ordered the Pinkeye Vaccine to be shipped overnight and began vaccinating my entire herd with it.  All but nursing babies were vaccinated.  The mothers of these nursing babies were vaccinated and the babies were allowed to continue nursing in hopes that the immunity would be passed to the babies in their mothers milk.

It will be several years before I can be sure if the Vaccine worked for my goats or not but I can tell you that the three goats who had Pinkeye before the Vaccine cleared up in just a few days.  All were pregnant Does but none of them lost their Kids.  As of today 5/9/2007 we have had no new cases of Pinkeye among our goats. :O)
